Herb-y Oven Roasted Turnip Fries

Step into fall with this tasty alternative to potato french fries.

Ingredients

To bake:

  • 3-4 turnips, peeled and stems removed
  • 2-3 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt & pepper

To finish:

  • Chopped herbs
  • Spices
  • Salt (Maldon is great for finishing if you've got it!)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F while you prep the turnips
  2. For perfectly sized fries, first slice the turnips length wise. Place the sliced flat surface side down on the cutting board and again slice length wise, aiming for something between 1/4" and 1/2" inch wedges. Turn each wedge with the widest flat suface side down and again slice length wise, aiming for the same width of your previous slice. Repeat for each halved turnip. This is the most complex part of the process, but once you get comfortable, it'll go quickly!
  3. In a bowl toss fries with olive oil and a sprinkling of salt & pepper and put in an even layer on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  4. Bake fries in the oven for 20 minutes, flip the fries over and bake for another 20 minutes.
  5. (Optional) If your fries aren't as crispy or browned as you'd like, broil for a few minutes. I recommend broiling on low and keeping a close eye on them!
  6. After reaching desired done-ness, remove fries from the oven and toss with herbs, spices and a little extra salt if needed. This is the most creative part of the whole recipe. Use whatever herbs or spices you have on hand or sound good!
